“Oceans Of Possibilities” Water Carnival and Summer Reading Kick Off (All Ages)

Saturday, June 18, 1 – 3pm

The Chatham Public Library kicks off their Summer Reading Program “Oceans of Possibilities” on Saturday, June 18 between 1pm to 3pm with a Water Carnival on the library lawn. Stop by the library to participate in a water balloon toss, water gun target game, play lawn games, and more. While you are here, pick up a reading log for your child to keep track of their summer reading and register for fun programs, workshops and performances all summer long! Registration is not required for this all ages event.

Renewable Energy STEAM Workshop – Water Wheel (Ages 7-11)

Thursday, June 30, 2 – 3:30pm 

Join author Kathy Ceceri in exploring different types of environment-friendly power systems and learn about their history and how they are used today.  In this workshop participants will make a low-tech water wheel using household and craft materials, and test it out under running water. Oceans of Texture Clay Exploration Take Home Kits for Kids (Ages 8 – 12)

July 1 – 30,  2022

With the summer reading theme of “Oceans of Possibilities” in mind, children (ages 8 -12) are invited to imagine life under the sea and create a pinch pot planter and a mini coral reef with local artist Sarah Haze. Families can pick up their play-along activity kits from the library between July 1 and 7, then access instructional youtube videos to create your project at your own pace from home. Completed projects can be returned for firing in a kiln by July 30. Fired work will be displayed at the library and can be picked up anytime between August 1 and 31. Summer Storytime & Craft at Stoddard Park (K-4th Grade)

Fridays at 2pm, July 8 – August 19

Join librarians from the Chatham Public Library, Canaan Library, and New Lebanon Library for stories, songs, and crafts at this Summer’s Storytime and Craft Program at Stoddard Park in Canaan, Fridays at 2pm from July 8th to August 19th. This program will be held outdoors, weather permitting, and registration is not required. Brought to you in partnership by the Chatham Public Library, Canaan Library and New Lebanon Library.

Pirates Lost At Sea with Talewise Science Show (Ages 4-12)

Tuesday July 12, 3:30 – 4:30pm

Ahoy there, matey! Set sail with Talewise Science Show on a thrilling action-packed adventure about a crew of quirky pirates marooned on a desert island. With mutiny and high-tide loomin, they must rescue their salty captain, and find a way to repair their ship before all hope is lost!

Throughout the story, we’ll explore the incredible science behind clouds, physical and chemical changes, air pressure, and more! Volunteers from the audience will help us conduct several hand-on science experiments that will amaze you! Registration is required at https://bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Textured Clay Extravaganza (for Adults and Teens)

Saturdays, July 16, 23, 30, and August 6, 1pm – 3pm

This 4 session workshop with local artist Sarah Haze will focus on the unique ability of clay to be imprinted with texture. During the first two sessions we will hand build two projects: an embossed plate and a decorative wall pocket. Texture will be explored through custom texture mats, handmade stamps, and found objects. In the third week, we will glaze our projects and in the fourth week, our final kiln fired results will be revealed and we will share our artworks with the group. Jack and the Beanstalk Puppet Show (Ages 3-8)

Monday, July 25, 3 – 4pm 

Fee! Fi! Fo! Fum! Find out what you get when you mix a cow, three magic beans and one giant beanstalk in this classic fairy tale performed by the Puppet People. Performance will take place in the Chatham Middle School gymnasium. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Mad Science “Life in the Sea” Science Workshop (Ages 6-10)

Thursday, July 28, 3:30 – 4:30pm

Mad Science of the Capital District visits the library for an interactive “Life in the Sea” workshop. Learn about the ocean’s diverse life forms – from plankton to whales! Hudson Valley Chamber Musicians Concert in Stoddard Park (All Ages)

Thursday, August 4, 6:30pm

Join the Canaan, Chatham, and New Lebanon Libraries for an evening of free music at Stoddard Park in Canaan, NY, featuring the Hudson Valley Chamber Musicians. Registration is not required for this all ages event.

End of Summer Reading Party & Family Movie Night (All Ages)

Wednesday, August 17, 6 – 8pm

Enjoy refreshments as you watch a movie on our oversize screen. After the movie, kids who are participants in the reading program can pick up their prizes. Registration is not required for this all ages event.

SUMMER KIDS CRAFTS

The Truth about Jellyfish: Movie & Craft (Ages 6-9) – Wed, June 22, 2 – 3pm

Join Ms. Becky as we learn the truth about jellyfish through a short video and experiment. Create your own hanging jellyfish with various recycled and craft materials. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Sand Art (Ages 5-11) – Thursday, June 23, 2 – 3pm

Explore sand art by making your own colorful sand with chalk and salt. Then use the sand to create layered bottles or dry painting pictures. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

T-Shirt Printing with Sea Creature Stencils (Ages 4-12) – Tue, June 28, 2 – 3pm

Bring a t-shirt from home and decorate it by stenciling your favorite sea creature. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Gyotaku Fish Prints (Ages 8-12) – Thursday, July 7, 2 – 3:30pm

Gyotaku, is a Japanese art form that began over 100 years ago as a way for fishermen to record the fish they caught. The fish is covered in ink then stamped onto paper. Join Ms. Becky as we create our own Gyotaku fish prints. Please wear a smock or old clothes. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Shadow Puppet Workshop (Ages 7-12) – Monday through Thursday, July 18 – 21, 2 – 3:30pm

Join Ms. Becky in this hands-on workshop where you’ll learn the art of shadow puppetry. With just a few recycled and craft materials you can make puppets and a stage to tell your own story. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Octopus’s Garden: Read! Listen! Paint! (Ages 5-8) – Thursday, August 4, 2 – 3 pm 

Join Ms. Becky as we read Octopus’s Garden by Ringo Star. Create a painting while listening to music and other ocean sounds. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Design a Lighthouse (Ages 6-10) – Wednesday, August 10, 2 – 3:30pm

Listen to a story and learn fun facts about lighthouses. Then, build a lighthouse from recycled and craft materials. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Paper Beads – Monday, August 1 & Wednesday, August 3, 2pm

Paper beads are one of the oldest crafts known on the African continent. Women of the villages generally make the paper beads from magazines that they find. Join us on Monday, August 1 to learn how to roll the paper into beads. Then on Wednesday, August 3 to design a necklace or bracelet using the beads you created.
